Renewable Materials - Science & Engineering
Renewable Materials is a great fit for me because I am interested in the future of wood products. The program takes this well-established, renewable material and builds on it with information on bamboo, hemp and other potentially marketable materials. I worked at Oregon State University this past summer on a red mold identification project. On a weekly basis I visited sawmills to retrieve lumber and collect samples from log decks. I gained experience in the lab, making media for petri plates and isolating fungi from wood samples. I plan on graduating from the program in June of 2014.
A few words about myself: I am an active and social individual. In high school I was a swimmer and a martial artist. Important lifestyle choices for me include nutrition, exercise and strong family values. I enjoy seeing movies, playing with my dogs and sitting down to a nice family meal.
Renewable Materials - Management & Marketing
I am a third year student double majoring in Renewable Materials and Interior Design with an option in Housing Studies. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Cleveland High School. Through high school I played soccer and lacrosse and competed in varsity golf. My past work experiences include volunteer positions in numerous organizations including Portland Public Schools and the American Cancer Society. I also have work experience in law firms and retail. I am currently working in my second position in the Department of Wood Science & Engineering on a project concerning green building materials of built structures.
I chose Renewable Materials because of my passion for sustainability, and as a way to supplement my Interior Design coursework. The more that I learn about renewable materials, the more excited I am about the industry. My ideal job would be working in the housing field or a sustainable design firm in the city, anything that allows me to be creative. I would also like to explore the possibilities of living and working abroad.
